Good Company Makes the Holiday Season a Little Brighter
The holiday season has a way of bringing people together. There are family dinners, neighborhood gatherings, old traditions, and opportunities to catch up with people we haven't seen in a while. But not everybody's holiday season looks the same, and that's something worth remembering.
Some people have family living across the country. Others have children and grandchildren with busy schedules of their own. Some are new to the area, recently retired, or still figuring out what their days look like after years of military service or a demanding career. And some simply enjoy having a few more things on the calendar that get them out of the house.
At Veterans Creative Arts Program (VCAP), we believe good company can make an ordinary afternoon enjoyable, and that doesn't change when the holidays roll around.
Throughout Brunswick County, North Carolina, we're helping veterans, active-duty military members, first responders, nurses, and their families find opportunities to stay active, learn something new, and spend time with others. The holidays are a wonderful time to appreciate those connections and maybe make a few new ones along the way.
The Holidays Don't Have to Look the Same for Everyone
There's no rule that says the holidays have to be filled with big family gatherings or elaborate plans.
A quiet Thanksgiving can be just as enjoyable as a crowded dinner table. Christmas might mean spending time with family, catching up with a neighbor, volunteering, or taking a little time to yourself. Everyone has different traditions, responsibilities, and circumstances.
What matters is having opportunities to enjoy the season in ways that feel right for you.
For veterans transitioning to civilian life, retirees settling into a different routine, or families adjusting to changes, the holidays can also be a good reminder of how important it is to stay involved with the people and places around us.
You don't have to fill every day with activities. Sometimes having one regular class, a familiar group of people, or a good conversation to look forward to makes a difference.
That's part of what we're working to create at VCAP.
Good Company Doesn't Always Require a Special Occasion
Think about the last time you had a really enjoyable conversation with someone.
It probably didn't require much planning. Maybe it happened over coffee, while working on a project, or when you ran into somebody you hadn't seen in a while.
Those everyday interactions are a big part of what makes a community feel like a community.
Here in Brunswick County, NC, we have veterans, military families, first responders, healthcare professionals, retirees, and neighbors who bring all kinds of experiences to the table. There are people who have lived here their entire lives and others who have recently made places like Leland, Southport, Shallotte, Oak Island, Calabash, Sunset Beach, and Ocean Isle Beach their home.
Not everybody knows where to begin when it comes to meeting people or getting involved.
That's where having a shared activity can help.
It's easier to strike up a conversation when you're sitting beside someone learning guitar, working on a painting, or listening to an interesting discussion. There's already something to talk about, and nobody has to worry about making the perfect introduction.
Over time, those familiar faces can become friends, and those regular activities can become something you genuinely enjoy having on your schedule.
A Class Can Be a Great Addition to Your Holiday Season
The weeks leading up to Thanksgiving and Christmas can get busy, but they're also a good time to make room for something you enjoy.
At Veterans Creative Arts Program, our creative arts classes and community programs in Brunswick County give participants opportunities to explore interests that might have been sitting on the back burner for years.
Maybe you enjoyed painting when you were younger but haven't picked up a brush in decades. Perhaps you've always wanted to learn guitar, try singing, or figure out how to put some of your favorite memories into words.
You might even discover that you enjoy an activity you never would have considered before.
Our programs have included:
Painting and creative arts classes: Opportunities to work with different materials, explore techniques, and enjoy making something with your own hands.
Guitar and singing classes: A chance to develop musical interests, practice, and enjoy music with others.
Tell Your Story classes: A welcoming setting for putting personal memories and experiences into words.
Line dancing: An enjoyable way to move, learn new steps, and spend time with a group.
Monthly Coffee Seminars: Conversations and educational discussions covering topics relevant to veterans, families, and the broader community.
Our class offerings and schedules change throughout the year, so we encourage everyone to check our website for current opportunities.
You don't need to arrive with experience or a particular talent. These programs are about participating, learning at your own pace, and enjoying the time you spend there.
And with the holidays approaching, having an activity that belongs to you can be a welcome addition to the season.
Staying Connected Matters at Every Stage of Life
Friendships and social connections are important throughout our lives, but the ways we maintain them often change.
During military service, people may spend years surrounded by others who share similar responsibilities, routines, and experiences. First responders and nurses also work in environments where teamwork and close relationships are part of everyday life.
When those careers change or retirement begins, the regular interaction that once came naturally may take a little more effort to maintain.
That doesn't mean the opportunities for friendship and connection are behind you.
There are still people to meet, things to learn, and activities to enjoy.
Research from organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institute on Aging has emphasized the importance of social connection for overall health and well-being. Staying involved with others can support emotional wellness, encourage healthy routines, and help people maintain a sense of belonging.
For veterans and retirees in Brunswick County, community programs can provide practical opportunities to keep those connections going.
At VCAP, we don't expect a painting class or a coffee seminar to solve every challenge someone might face. What we can do is provide welcoming places where people can spend time together, continue learning, and develop relationships naturally.
We believe that's worth making time for, during the holidays and throughout the rest of the year.
There's Plenty to Enjoy Right Here in Brunswick County
We live in an area with a lot to offer, and the holiday season gives us even more reasons to appreciate it.
A walk along the waterfront in Southport, an afternoon exploring Shallotte, a visit with friends in Leland, or a community gathering near Calabash or Sunset Beach can be a simple way to enjoy the season.
For those who have recently moved to southeastern North Carolina, getting involved locally can also make a new community feel more familiar.
You begin recognizing people when you're out running errands. You learn about local organizations and events. You find activities you enjoy and discover places you might not have visited otherwise.
VCAP is proud to be part of that local community.
Our mission is to improve the health, well-being, and quality of life of veterans, active military members, first responders, nurses, and their families through creative arts programs and shared experiences.
While art is part of our name, our work has always been about more than what someone creates in a classroom.
It's about giving people opportunities to stay involved in the community they call home.
Make Room for Something You Enjoy This Season
The holiday calendar can fill up quickly with shopping, appointments, travel, family obligations, and everything else that comes with the end of the year.
But there's value in making room for things that are simply enjoyable.
You might decide to reconnect with someone you haven't seen in a while, invite a neighbor for coffee, attend a local gathering, or finally look into a class you've been curious about.
And if you know someone who doesn't have many holiday plans, consider extending an invitation. It doesn't have to be a big event. A cup of coffee, a shared activity, or an afternoon spent catching up can be a thoughtful way to include someone.
We also know that walking into a new group for the first time isn't always easy. That's why we want our programs to feel approachable and comfortable for the people who join us.
There's no expectation that everyone arrives knowing exactly what they're doing. Learning together is part of the experience.
For veterans, military families, first responders, nurses, and other eligible participants looking for community activities in Brunswick County, NC, VCAP offers a place to begin.
Good Company Is Something to Appreciate All Year Long
Thanksgiving and Christmas give us opportunities to think about the people we're grateful for, but friendship and community shouldn't be limited to a few weeks on the calendar.
The people we get to know through shared activities often become part of our everyday lives. We look forward to seeing them, hearing what they've been up to, and spending time together.
That's what we hope participants find through Veterans Creative Arts Program.
As we head into the holiday season, we're grateful for the instructors who share their knowledge, the volunteers who give their time, the supporters who help make our programs possible, and every participant who walks through the door.
Each person brings something different to VCAP, and together they help make it a welcoming place to spend time.
If you're looking for veteran programs, creative arts classes, lifelong learning opportunities, or community activities in Brunswick County, we'd love for you to see what we have going on.
The holidays may be what gets you thinking about spending more time with others, but there's no reason to stop when the decorations come down.
